From Nepal village to university leader: Professor Padam Simkhada to deliver inaugural lecture

Professor Padam Simkhada's inaugural lecture, From a Village in Nepal: Reflections on Research, Leadership and Social Change, will take place on Thursday, October 15, from 6.30pm to 8pm, both in person at the University of Chester and online. 

The event is open to members of the public, staff, students and partners interested in learning more about Professor Simkhada's work and the role of research, leadership and international collaboration in driving social change. 

The lecture will explore how education, opportunity, research and international collaboration have influenced Professor Simkhada's personal and professional journey, while examining how universities can help tackle some of society's most pressing challenges. 

Drawing on experiences from Nepal, the United Kingdom and collaborations around the world, Professor Simkhada will discuss issues including global health, health inequalities, migration, sustainability and social development. The lecture will highlight the power of research and education to create meaningful change and deliver real-world impact for communities. 

Professor Simkhada has built an international reputation through his work in public health, research leadership and capacity building. Throughout his career, he has supervised doctoral researchers, mentored early-career academics and contributed to strengthening research and education systems in low and middle-income countries. 

As part of the lecture, he will reflect on the lessons learned from working with students, colleagues, communities and international partners, and consider the vital role universities play in developing people who go on to make a positive difference in the world. 

Professor Simkhada said: "This lecture is an opportunity to reflect on a journey that began in a small village in Nepal and has been shaped by the transformative power of education, research and collaboration. I hope to share not only the lessons I have learned along the way, but also the importance of creating opportunities for others to develop their potential and make a positive impact on society. Universities have a unique responsibility to generate knowledge, inspire future generations and work in partnership with communities to address global challenges." 

Looking to the future, Professor Simkhada will also share his aspirations for the University of Chester as a globally connected institution that nurtures talent, advances research excellence and creates lasting positive impact locally, nationally and internationally.
