Suraksha’s Chester Made Story: Bridging the gap between my clinical experience and healthcare management
Find out how Suraksha is Chester Made.
A Welcoming Start
When I look back at my time at the University of Chester, what stands out most is the strong sense of support and belonging I felt from the very beginning. Moving from Pakistan to the United Kingdom was a big step for me, both personally and professionally, but the welcoming environment at the University of Chester made the transition much easier. It quickly became a place where I felt comfortable growing and building my confidence.
A Course That Matched My Ambition
What I appreciated most about my MSc Health Services Management course was how practical and aligned it was with my future goals. As a dentist, I wanted to go beyond clinical practice and gain a deeper understanding of the management side of healthcare. The course gave me valuable insights into leadership, patient care systems and healthcare operations, all of which are essential for running a successful dental practice.
Learning Through Real‑world Experience
One of the most impactful parts of my experience at the University of Chester was working on real-world case studies and collaborative projects. These opportunities helped me understand how healthcare systems operate in the UK while also strengthening my critical thinking and decision-making skills. They gave me a broader perspective on patient-centred care and service improvement.
A Supportive Learning Environment
Some of my favourite memories from the University of Chester come from the interactions with my teachers and classmates. The lecturers were incredibly supportive and approachable. They created an environment where we felt comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and learning from one another. I am especially grateful to the core teaching team of 2022-2023 for their constant encouragement and guidance.
Growth Beyond the Classroom
My time at the University of Chester has played a huge role in shaping who I am today. It did not just develop my academic and professional skills. It also helped me grow in confidence, independence and adaptability. Living and studying in the UK truly broadened my perspective and strengthened my ambition.
Finding My Direction
The University of Chester helped me find my direction by bridging the gap between my clinical background and my interest in healthcare management. It gave me the clarity, knowledge and tools I needed to move forward with my goal of opening my own dental practice in the future. Looking back, the experience has been genuinely transformative.
Post‑Graduation: A New Chapter
Since starting my career in the UK, one of my proudest achievements has been becoming a registered dental therapist with the General Dental Council. As a registered overseas dentist from Pakistan, this milestone holds even greater significance for me, as it reflects my ability to adapt and grow within a new healthcare system. Adjusting to a different professional environment was not always easy, but reaching this point has been incredibly rewarding. Alongside this, I am also proud to be teaching Health and Social Care Sciences at a college in London, where I can share my knowledge and inspire future healthcare professionals.
Making an Impact Every Day
What I love most about my work now is the balance it offers. As a dental therapist, I am able to directly improve patients’ oral health and boost their confidence, which is very fulfilling. At the same time, teaching allows me to mentor and guide students as they begin their own journeys in healthcare.
I truly feel that my work makes a difference on multiple levels. Through my clinical role, I support individuals in maintaining better oral health, which is a key part of overall wellbeing. Through teaching, I contribute to shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals, creating a wider impact on communities and the healthcare system.
Proud to be a Chester Graduate
Being a University of Chester graduate means a great deal to me. It represents growth, resilience and the courage to pursue my ambitions internationally. My time there gave me the confidence, skills and direction I needed to build my career in the UK, and it will always remain an important part of my journey.
Guidance for Future Graduates
My advice to current and future students is simple. Stay focused, stay open to learning and make the most of every opportunity. Do not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, especially if you are studying abroad. Build strong relationships with your teachers and peers, as those connections can support and guide you throughout your journey.
