Meet the Sustainability Team
The role of the Sustainability team is to ensure sustainability is at the heart of decision-making and service delivery at the University of Chester.
To enable this, the university has established a range of committees and groups and has a dedicated staff team working towards continuously improving our sustainability performance across campus operations, teaching, research and student life.
Infrastructure and Sustainability Board
This Board develops and communicates the University’s vision for the Infrastructure and Sustainability of the University’s physical and digital estate. The Board focuses on setting and governing the strategic direction.
In relation to sustainability the purpose of the I&S Board is to:
- Define the overall implementation plan for the Estates, Digital and Sustainability vision, with reference to the KPIs, and identify the critical path
- Retain oversight of the University’s sustainability targets
Sustainability Committee
The University established a Sustainability Committee in June 2024 to promote and coordinate the development and implementation of the University’s Environmental Management System and Sustainability initiatives across the University.
The aim of the Sustainability Committee is to provide leadership and coordination for the embedding of sustainability throughout the University’s teaching and learning, research, estates, operations, and culture.
Objectives/Duties
- Provide a strategic oversight of the University’s sustainability goals.
- Review policies and procedures in relation to their contributions and impacts on University’s sustainability goals.
- Maintain an overall assessment of the key sustainability risks to inform strategies.
- Oversee the coordination and delivery of sustainability initiatives across all aspects of the University.
- Coordinate communication strategies and mechanisms to engage staff and students on sustainability and promote cultural change.
- Advise on good practices in integrating sustainability in teaching and research and facilitate collaboration across faculties, schools and divisions.
- Oversee the University’s reporting on sustainability performance and advise on the use of data platforms and dashboards.
- Call attention to future developments in sustainability and identify upcoming opportunities.
- Monitor and review the progress to achieve and maintain ISO14001 certification for Environmental Management System (EMS).
Reporting
The Sustainability Committee meets four times per year and reports to the Infrastructure & Sustainability Board at the University.
Action Groups
Staff and students are also able to support the university achieving its sustainability goals and continual improvements of our Environmental Management System through participation in action groups. These groups include:
- Biodiversity Action Group
- Energy, emissions and water Action Group
- Food, waste and resources Action Group
- Sustainable procurement Action Group
- Travel and transport Action Group
Each Action Group will meet on a bi-monthly basis to identify priorities, develop objectives, set targets, carry out action planning, deliver discrete projects and review progress.
