Travel Plan

The University’s Travel Plan is currently being developed to provide a comprehensive strategy for the University in its entirety for the period 2022-2030. It includes University-wide objectives and targets, an action plan for delivery of a range of measures and details the monitoring mechanisms we will use to chart our progress.

The successful delivery of the Travel Plan will ensure that we are not only improving our environment by reducing vehicular emissions, localised congestion, and improving air quality, but that we are also maximising the accessibility of our campuses and buildings for the University community both now and in the future.

Travel & Transport Action Group

With a focus on sustainable travel to and from the University and across the wider community, the Travel and Transport Action Group promotes and facilitates access to sustainable transport options. Recent initiatives of this action group have included the delivery of bike repair & maintenance sessions on campus and contributing to the design of the travel survey.

Sustainable Travel

Walking, cycling and wheeling offer clear financial and health benefits over other forms of transport. Switching to these modes also has a positive impact on demand for University car parking, localised congestion and air quality. Our University sites are all well connected to main roads, bus routes and train stations. This enables all our staff and students to have easy access to transport and supports our commuting students too.

Local public transport

Our aim is to augment public transport accessibility for staff, students and visitors:

Bache and Chester train stations are a 15 – 20 minute walk from Exton Park, Queen’s Park, Wheeler and Kingsway sites. There are also frequent bus services that run through Chester, making it easy to travel to campus. Students can also visit Bren Bikes for affordable, upcycled bikes throughout the academic year.

For more information, including timetables, please visit Cheshire West & Chester Council’s dedicated public transport webpage.

Marriss House is located down the road from Hamilton Square station, which sees regular Merseyrail services from Liverpool, the Wirral and Chester. Birkenhead’s bus station is nearby, mainly served by Arriva and Stagecoach services.

For more information, including information on Mersey Ferry services, please visit Wirral Council’s dedicated public transport webpage.

Our Warrington sites are located centrally, with Warrington Central and Warrington Bank Quay train stations being just a 10 minute walk away. The Council own and manage the Bus Interchange, which is located close to Central station, with Warrington Own Buses offering weekly tickets at a reduced rate and discounted travel on certain services.

For more information, please visit Warrington Council’s dedicated public transport webpage.

Active Travel

The University encourages active transport through activities such as Dr Bike sessions and wellbeing walks. Students, staff and visitors can also access one of the cycle storage facilities we have across all our sites.

The Sports and Active Lifestyle team have produced a variety of walking and running routes around our Exton Park campus and Chester city centre. All maps include distance, a difficulty rating and approximate times to run and walk. If you require any further information, please email sal@chester.ac.uk.

Chester Cycling Campaign have created a library of local cycle maps, free to access via their website. The maps provide a useful resource if you are looking to cycle around the city of Chester or in between our campuses.

Bren Bikes is a local social enterprise, who offer refurbished bicycles at an affordable price, and provide maintenance and repair services. The University works closely with Bren Bikes, delivering free maintenance and repair sessions for staff and students to access.
