Check out a few of our most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) regarding working alongside your studies at the University of Chester.
Can I work alongside my studies?
Possibly! Lots of students work alongside their studies because it's a great way to make their student loans stretch a bit further. Our Earn while you Learn scheme now supports students to work up to 20 hours per week in term-time.
If you're an International student, please check the details of your visa - this will dictate whether you can work in the UK, and if so, how many hours a week you can work in term-time.
Where can I find part-time jobs?
CareerHub, our online careers information and jobs board, is a great place to start - it lists vacancies from big brands, and local employers, alongside Unijob roles at our sites. CareerHub gets updated daily, so be sure to visit regularly or set up vacancy alerts direct to your email inbox to ensure you don't miss out!
We're also running a Part-Time Jobs Fair on Friday 2nd October 2026 in Welcome Week which will be full of local employers with part-time vacancies. The fair will run from 11.00am to 1.30pm so make sure you add this to your calendar. There will be roles in Hospitality, Catering, Events, Administration, Education and Childcare, Healthcare and Social Care, Retail, Emergency Services, Logistics, Marketing and more! Employers already confirmed as attending include Brio Leisure, Storyhouse, Cheshire West and Chester Council among many others.
Does the University offer part-time jobs?
Yes - we offer a variety of part-time jobs at most of our sites through our UniJob scheme. Roles include:
- Student Ambassador
- Catering Assistant
- Transport Assistant
- Lifeguard
- Libraries and Information Services (LIS) Student Assistant
These roles are all advertised on CareerHub.
How do I become a Student Ambassador?
We recruit Student Ambassadors at key points in the academic year, with the main bulk of roles usually available in October. Being a Student Ambassador is a great way to earn some extra money and pick up shifts on a flexible basis around your studies.
There are three main types of role:
- Events
- Academic
- Content Creator
Events roles involve working at our student recruitment events such as Open Days, which can include delivering campus tours, accommodation tours and signposting. Academic roles involve working with your academic department to advocate for your course and help recruit the next round of students to the University. Content Creator roles involve creating digital content to advertise the University, such as TikTok/Reel videos, image content and blogs.

How many hours can I work a week?
If you're a UK Home student, you can now work up to 20 hours per week in term-time.
Important visa information: If you hold a Student visa, you must not work more than the hours permitted by your visa during term time. Exceeding this limit is a breach of your visa conditions and could put your immigration status at risk. Your permitted hours may vary, so check your visa conditions and seek advice from the University’s Visa team before accepting additional work or hours.
Can I work more hours outside of term-time?
Yes - outside of term-time, during official University vacation dates, UK Home students are allowed to work up to 36 hours per week.
International students may also be allowed to work more than 20 hours per week during official vacation dates. Please check your visa for more information.
You can find the University term and vacation dates on our website.
